Practice Profile

Charles Barclay Architects is a small, design-led practice based in a former theatrical workshop in Brixton, which they converted in 2000. Charles Barclay set up in January 1996, having worked for practices in London and New York, and for Sarvodaya in Sri Lanka. The office workload is mostly domestic and ranges from high-spec inner London projects to an innovative low-energy farmhouse in Cornwall. The practice prides itself in obtaining planning permission for unusual designs in sensitive settings or in relation to Listed Buildings and has been placed in a number of high profile international competitions for urban design proposals.

Charles Barclay Architects are featured in the Architecture Foundation’s New Architects 2, a compilation of the best emerging practices in the UK. Their current workload includes proposals for a Creative Skills Centre in Hackney and work for the Bettie Morton Gallery in Brixton.
