The Keilder observatory is to be a democratic observation platform for amateur astronomers, with two permanent telescopes and space for individuals to set up their own personal telescopes. The building typology is the timber pier or bridge, that is usable both as an observatory at night and as a viewing platform during the day. When closed the observatory enclosures have the character of rather mysterious weatherboard huts; when in use, the 'huts', come to life, one with its roof slid back, the other with its viewing slot open, rotated to track the night's stellar event.
